We see so many nice designs in our gallery, on our forum and even in our e-mail inbox that we want to help to recognise those individuals who have embraced 3D printing. We’re looking for the most inspirational designer, maker or hobbyist. Someone who is passionate about 3D printing, embraces the 3D printing revolution and carries out 3D printing in the very best way.

Through this award, designed by Twikit, we want to put designers, who show great talent and promise, in the spotlight.

Playing with 3D printed chess pieces -3D Printing Service Blog - watch us make the future

Playing with 3D printed chess pieces -3D Printing Service Blog - watch us make the future | COOL 3DPRINTING | Scoop.it
Jonny Anthony loves chess.
And what’s cooler than customizing and 3D printing your own chess set?”
I am no Grandmaster but I play ever day and have done it for years. It was about time to have my own chess set,” tells Jonny Anthony, a graduate from Chelsea School of Art in london. “
I am obsessed with chess. For my own set I wanted to design a contemporary chess set that was modern and stylish but that could still be readable midway through a game, which I hope I have achieved.
Often I see modern chess piece designs which look great at the start of the game when the pieces are on their ranks, but are confusingly similar when the board is mixed up.” -

3D printed shoes hit the catwalk of the Royal Academy of Fashion | i.materialisemake the future | COOL 3DPRINTING | Scoop.it

3D printing is on the way to conquer the catwalks again. This time it’s not Iris van Herpen, but  Pierre Renaux, a master student at the Royal Academy of Fashion in Antwerp, to push the 3D printing revolution forward in fashion.

Pierre Renaux just opened the fashion show in Antwerp with his collection. All the shoes in the collection are 3D printed (and fabulous).

A bracelet made using i.materialise's flexible Rubber-like material

Most 3D-printed objects are made out of rigid plastic or resin materials that aren't necessarily ideal for every project.

Now, for a limited time online shops like i.materialise are offering designers the chance to play with experimental materials that have properties akin to rubber.

Currently these materials are only being offered on a limited basis, but they're already paving the way for new ideas, including one haute couture dress that paraded down the catwalk at Spring Fashion Week 2013 earlier this year.

Dutch fashion-tech designer Anouk Wipprecht, with the support of architect Niccolo Casas, has teamed up with our parent company Materialise in the creation of an innovative, interactive 3D printed ‘Smoke Dress’ as part of a special eight-piece fashion collection for Volkswagen.

What an amazing dress, the ‘Smoke Dress’. Every time when someone steps into the personal space of the wearer, the Smoke Dress automatically creates a veil of smoke.

3D Printing Technology

With Z Corp's 3D Printing Technology, the printer builds a model up from bottom to top, layer by layer. A roller puts a thin layer of powder on a platform and a print head sprays tiny drops of glue at specific places, printing a thin layer of your model.

The platform lowers and the roller spreads another layer of powder. Coloring is done by combining 4 different pre-colored glues to match the requested surface colo

Recycling 3D printing materials: 4 possible solutions - watch us make the future (feel free to join in)

Recycling 3D printing materials: 4 possible solutions - watch us make the future (feel free to join in) | COOL 3DPRINTING | Scoop.it

Last week in a comment, Paul asked me, “When will more eco and sustainable materials be available for use in these printers?

Something like hemp plastic or other biodegradable materials?

What are the technical limitations and who is working on them?”

His question was a bit too big for a comment so I”mtrying to answer it here.

Below I outline, very broadly, four mayor developments in recycling and 3D printing.

These developments are: recycling existing 3D printing materials, using materials that are already recycled as 3D printing materials, bioplastics & recycling on location.

ABS- Recycling existing 3D printing materials

ABS is one of the world’s most widely used 3D printing materials. It is used in the RepRaps, Makerbots and of course by the inventors of the Fused Deposition Modeling process Stratasys.

While ABS is made from oil and lots of complicated sounding chemicals, it is recyclable. Fred Fischer, the Materials Business Development Director at Stratasys said that, “Stratasys has a company that comes in and picks up all our scrap and old sample parts and build sheets.

These companies typically regrind all the materials. The regrind is often used to make products like carpet, plastic decking, lawn furniture, etc.

Companies that will pick up and recycle the material exist pretty much anywhere in the developed world. A quick Google will often lead someone to find one in their local area.”

That is indeed great news and it seems like it could scale along with the growth of 3D printing.

First Asian 3D Print Fashion Show | i.materialise 3D Printing Service Blog - watch us make the future (feel free to join in) | COOL 3DPRINTING | Scoop.it

In Malaysia, Materialise recently collaborated with Melinda Looi, an internationally acclaimed fashion designer, for Asia’s first 3D Print Fashion Show.

Last Friday, the fashion show took place in 21st century metropolis that is Kuala Lumpur.

The idea of the fashion show was to demonstrate how 3D printing is again breaking down barriers in product design and leading to exciting new innovations in how products are conceived and manufactured.

It was also the place where the winners of our 3D printed accessories challenge (inspired by birds) were shown to the world. If you like the stunning photos by Zung, Malaysia’s number one photographer, you might want to have a look at our Facebook and Google+ page to find tons more.

Barney, a final year product design student from Brunel University in London, made an interesting project:

As part of a group project, we had to design products for an existing brand: we chose Moleskine. I ended up designing a conceptual handheld device for 3D artists allowing them to capture a digital library of textures and 3D objects on the go.”

“It was printed in stainless steel;  I’m really pleased with the unique texture of the print.”
