3D Printing And Space (Part 2): Made In Space - 3D Printing Industry

3D Printing And Space (Part 2): Made In Space - 3D Printing Industry | COOL 3DPRINTING | Scoop.it

In this next part of the Space & 3D Printing series Shane will be looking at specific applications of 3DP to nano-sats, the International Space Station, and examining how capturing an asteroid can be a BIG earner.

The reader may well, most understandably, find that upon the realisation mankind is on brink of genuinely considering terminology such as ‘home-world’ as a pragmatic, technological, and indeed industrial, reference takes a while to rationally and emotionally accept. In this next part of the series I will be looking at specific applications of 3DP to nano-sats, the International Space Station, and examining how capturing an asteroid can be a BIG earner. For example, asteroid 1997 RT, which has an estimated net worth of USD$6.21trillion.

Print It Yourself -- A Revolution in Production? 3D Printing & Everyday Problems

And yet another industrial revolution -- manufacturing outside the factory. 3D printers are becoming increasingly better, faster and more affordable.

The following SiemensTV video features Mark Burhop, part of Siemens PLM’s development team, showing us how 3D Printers can be used to solve everyday problems.

Mark uses a Solidoodle 2 to create a custom iPhone stand for his car. This example leads us to think how we will be solving small problems in the future, and what the effect on manufacturing will be.

The video started out as Mark’s personal project, but as the people at SiemensTV saw it, they decided to add narration and extra footage to create an educational video for their channel.

New Shoes – 3D Printed

New Shoes – 3D Printed | COOL 3DPRINTING | Scoop.it

More shoe designers are experimenting with 3D printing, and they are all collaborating with imaterialise to produce their footwear.

Granted they’re not your everyday, throw on pairs. But for anyone with a shoe fettish (that would be me, and I KNOW there are others!) they are captivating and produce involuntary ooo’s and aaaah’s …. You may have noticed that original shoes are a guilty pleasure of mine, 2nd only to hats, even though, these days, I’m not sure I could successfully wear them, and by successful, I mean not fall over and embarrass myself!

The shoes in the gallery below come from Katrien Herdewyn, who, it seems is an extremely busy lady — as well as working on her PhD in Physics, she is also studying Shoe Design at the Academy of Fine Arts, Sint-Niklaas (SASK). Her shoes are largely experimental, but she says of her work: “The main theme of these shoes is nano technology.

The inspiration came from my studies: I studied electrical engineering, material sciences and nanotechnology at the University of Leuven.”

Inside 3D Printing Expo Heads to Chicago This July

Inside 3D Printing Expo Heads to Chicago This July | COOL 3DPRINTING | Scoop.it

Following on from the success of the inaugural Inside 3D Printing event in New York City in April, which attracted more than 3,000 attendees and industry leading exhibitors like MakerBot, Stratasys and 3D Systems, the summer edition of the show will take place in Chicago this coming July.

Even since Inside 3D Printing took place in April, 3D printing has continued to see exponential growth and received tremendous news coverage — good and bad — and as a result it has further piqued the interest and involvement of government officials.

The organisers of are therefore delighted that Congressman Bill Foster of the 11th Congressional District of Illinois will openly discuss digital manufacturing and its connection to policy, education and jobs at the upcoming Inside 3D Printing Conference on July 10-11 in Chicago.

The summer event will also continue to build on its success and further bring together leading industry players, innovators, entrepreneurs and investors to discuss the impact of 3D printing on various fields.

TAZ – LulzBot’s Newest 3D Printer is All Grown Up - 3D Printing Industry

TAZ – LulzBot’s Newest 3D Printer is All Grown Up - 3D Printing Industry | COOL 3DPRINTING | Scoop.it

TAZ is the latest desktop 3D printer to come from Colorado’s LulzBot (aka Aleph Objects), following the AO-100 and AO-101 with improved specs. Besides taking a slightly different physical form compared with its predecessors,

The TAZ’s most important upgrade is related to the print area, which has been increased to 298 mm x 275 mm x 250 mm (11.8” x 10.8” x 9.8”) from the AO-101’s 200 mm x 190 mm x 100 mm (7.9” x 7.5” x  – 3.9”). In the real world the difference is comparable with that of basketball vs. softball – in numerical form that translates to 20,500 cm3 (1238 in3) for the new TAZ.

Using the former ball as an example does sound quite similar and it seems to be the new de facto size standard as prosumer printers go big(ger) this year.
